Gabrielle Giffords continues to make progress following brain injury

Gabrielle Giffords continues to make significant progress in her recovery from a gunshot wound to the brain last January. Giffords nearly died in the attack during a constituent event in Tucson. Giffords' recovery has been arduous and painstaking.

Gifford's husband has been there to help her along and in November she gave her first TV interview since the incident. The interview was given on "20/20" before the couple's joint memoir about Giffords' recovery was to be released. The book chronicles Giffords' recovery and demonstrates how a traumatic brain injury is a catastrophic event that completely turns the life of the patient and their family around.

Recovery for brain injury victims is a long and difficult process

Since her recovery from a near-fatal gunshot wound to the head, Representative Gabrielle Giffords' recovery has characterized as miraculous. However, many medical experts caution that her recovery is going to be a long and difficult process. Representative Giffords will need extensive therapy to undertake basic everyday tasks, including dressing herself, eating and speaking.

Dr. Robert Stevens, a professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University cautions brain injury patients and their families that the road to recovery is a long one. He tells them, "This is a long, drawn-out process, and it can be extremely frustrating. There can be days where things are so much better, and some days where nothing is changing."
